3D Mammograms

A mammogram is one of the most important preventative measures a woman can take to maintain breast health. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. At our care center, we offer 3D mammograms, the most effective screening method for breast cancer to help with early detection. To make your appointment more convenient, we can schedule your mammogram and annual well woman visit on the same day.

Mammogram Q & A

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to screen for breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. For many women, mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Regular mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40, or earlier if there is a family history of breast cancer.

Why should I get a 3D Mammography exam?

At our care center, we offer 3D mammograms, the most effective screening method for breast cancer to help with early detection. The Hologic exam provides better, earlier breast cancer detection compared to 2D alone. Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and a reduced chance of additional screenings.

How does 3D Mammography work?

The 3D exam allows doctors to examine your breast tissue layer by layer. So, instead of viewing all the complexities of your breast tissue in a flat image, as with conventional 2D mammography, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below. A good analogy for the Hologic exam is like thinking of the pages in a book. If you look down at the cover you cannot see all the pages - but when you open it up, you can go through the entire book page by page to see everything between the covers.

What can I expect during my exam?

The process of a 3D exam is the same as a conventional 2D exam. The technologist will position you, compress your breast, and take images from different angles. There's no additional compression required with the 3D exam.

What can I expect after my exam?

Our screening mammograms are read by the radiologist within a few days. First, the report is sent to the physician, and a few days later a letter is mailed to the patient advising her whether the mammogram is normal or if she needs to be referred to an imaging center for follow-up tests. This letter will also be available via the patient portal.

How do I schedule an appointment for a I mammogram?

If you haven't had a mammogram in the last year, we encourage you to schedule one with our experienced breast health professionals. For your convenience, we offer same-day mammography services with your annual well woman visits.
